The Green Mountain Club Stewards of Vermont's Long Trail
The Green Mountain Club (GMC) founded, built, and maintains Vermont's Long Trail, the oldest long-distance hiking trail in America. The Long Trail spans the high peaks through Vermont from the Massachusetts state line 270+ miles to the Canadian border. In addition to maintaining and protecting this "footpath through the wilderness," membership and volunteer contributions support land conservation, education programs, and stewardship of Vermont's mountain lands just as we have since 1910. The Winooski Footbridge Working to Establish a Safe, Appropriate and Permanent Route for the Long Trail through the Winooski River Valley
After a century of the Long Trail crossing the river by a farmer's row board, a railroad trestle, dangerous fording, and a road bridge without a sidewalk, the Green Mountain Club is close to finally bringing America's oldest hiking to and over a footbridge across the Winooski River. A new route for the trail has been secured, and we expect to begin work this summer on a 220-foot pedestrian footbridge across the river in Bolton, Vt. We have raised much of the one million dollars that the project will cost – but we need broad and generous member support to reach our goal of $1,400,000.
The momentum is going strong! We'll be crossing the Winooski via a gorgeous bridge soon! Let Daan Zwick, GMC caretaker in the 1930s and '40s (and volunteer caretaker into his 80s) and lead donor of the project, tell you why this matters:
Special Gift Opportunity: Be an essential part of the Winooski Footbridge by supporting at the Plank ($250) or Cable ($1,000) level. Or consider purchasing several planks or cables! Donors at these levels will be permanently displayed at the Visitor Center. Please click here to make a donation.
