A high volume of work on our trails, shelters, and environment 

Each year, from June to October, dozens of seasonal field staff spend their summers living and working on the Long Trail. We hire trail crew members across all experience levels, and in recent years have funded two trail crews focused on various tread projects, and 2-3 Senior Trail Technicians who complete complicated backcountry construction and repair projects on shelters, privies, and bridges.  

Caretakers and volunteers also conduct critical trail improvement projects, from routine maintenance in the spring and fall, to building puncheon and repairing shelters, to managing the composting process at GMC’s 72 backcountry privies (outhouses).
