Here at the Green Mountain Club we work hard to keep you informed of trail closures and conditions that may impact the hiking experience on the Long Trail, side trails, Appalachian Trail, and Northeast Kingdom Trails. Check back to this page for the most recent and current trail updates, or sign up for our email newsletter to get relevant updates in your inbox monthly.

We encourage hikers to share their trail observations with the club by calling or emailing the visitor center. Please be aware that all such trail updates sent to the club or posted in its Facebook group may be used and publicized on this page with the source cited.

    Hikers and backpackers should be advised that Taft Lodge, on Mount Mansfield, will be closed for repairs beginning September 8. GMC technicians will be replacing rotting sill logs on the 105-year-old structure, the oldest, largest, and second-highest overnight site on the Long Trail.   There is no tenting or hammocking permitted outside Taft Lodge or anywhere above 2,500’, which includes much of the Mount…

  • Lake Mansfield Trail Bridge Closed

    Details

    Due to structural concerns, the bridge on the Lake Mansfield Trail closed (as of 8/23/24). The trail remains open, and hikers will have to ford the stream until the bridge is replaced. In times of high water it may be a hazardous crossing. At this time, there is no timeline on the bridge’s replacement.

  • Black Bear Activity and Required Food Storage

    As of a 2019 Forest Order, proper food storage and disposal is required in the Green Mountain National Forest. Food, trash, and smellables must be stored in an approved container, including a bear box, locked car, approved bear canister, or properly hung bear bag.
