Local Sections
The Green Mountain Club is lucky to have the incredible support of 14 regional sections made up of members and volunteers, which have been an essential part of the club’s fabric since its founding in 1910. Each section is responsible for maintaining a portion of the Long Trail System or Appalachian Trail in Vermont. They also build community through work days, potlucks, and outdoor outings.

Section Spotlight: Upper Valley Ottauqueechee
Each section is responsible for maintaining a portion of the Long Trail. They conduct work trips each spring and fall, monitoring the trail for damage, removing fallen trees, clearing out drains, clipping brush, and performing other light maintenance tasks that ensure that water is draining off the trail, and hikers are staying on it. These volunteers are also the eyes and ears of the trail system, and can report back any impending trail problems that may require staff or trail crew interference.
UVO volunteers identified a section of sidehill trail that was sloughing away, which means the outside, downhill edge was migrating downhill due to gravity and hiker traffic. UVO Section volunteers will repair the trail this summer, using benching techniques to re-establish the tread with a firm and stable backslope, tread and outslope.
