Education on Vermont’s Highest Peak
The Mount Mansfield Visitor Center sits on the mountain’s iconic ridgeline, at at the top of the Stowe Auto Toll Road. It is accessible by foot or by car and is staffed by Green Mountain Club backcountry caretakers and volunteer trail stewards. Open daily from mid-June through Indigenous Peoples’ Day in October, it has limited amenities (no running water) but is a wonderful place to learn more about the ridgeline, trails on Mount Mansfield, and the unique and fragile alpine vegetation that calls Mount Mansfield home.
The summit ridge and the Visitor Center are owned and managed by the University of Vermont as a State Natural Area and National Natural Landmark.
Exploring the Mansfield Ridgeline
If hiking up Mansfield’s strenuous trails is not on your to-do list, driving up the Toll Road is a wonderful way to explore the mountain. When you arrive at the parking lot, you can meet a GMC caretaker or volunteer who will give you great advice for where and how to explore. Stop inside the building to learn about the rare alpine flora and fauna found here, and more about the Long Trail, GMC caretakers, and the environmental research that happens on Mount Mansfield.
- Frenchman’s Pile is about a 10-minute walk from the visitor center, north on the white-blazed Long Trail.
- The Chin, Mansfield’s highest point, is 1.4 miles from the Visitor Center with some elevation gain and rough footing.
- There is no hiker access to The Nose (the tall outcropping with radio towers on it visible from the Visitor Center), due to fragile alpine vegetation and broadcast telecommunications operations.
- The summit ridgeline is also home to a snaking network of challenging and exciting side trails blazed in blue or yellow. We highly recommend researching these trails using the Long Trail Guide, Long Trail Map, and/or Mount Mansfield Area Map before exploring as many are rated extremely difficult and require climbing, scrambling, or squeezing through tight caves.
Protect Vermont’s Largest Remaining Alpine Zone
As a visitor to the Mount Mansfield Visitor Center and ridgeline, we ask for your cooperation in protecting the fragile remaining alpine vegetation found here. Caretakers and trail stewards are stationed here to orient you and provide guidance on how you can help protect these endangered plant species.
- Stay only on designated trails (marked by white blazes and white string) and take care to step on the rocks, not on vegetation.
- Many fragile alpine plants look just like regular lawn grass, so it’s best to avoid stepping on any vegetation altogether.
- Leash dogs in the alpine zone and keep them on the trail and close to your side as well.
- Dispose of all human and pet waste properly. There are porta potties in the Toll Road parking lot, and these are the only bathroom facilities on the ridgeline. There is nowhere to hide or bury waste either. Please bag all pet waste and carry it out with you.
