Workshops and Outings

Types of Events

We offer a variety of in-person and virtual events, as well as recordings of recent events here.

Workshops

GMC’s Hiking Basics and Skills Workshops are designed to outfit you with the knowledge you need to be safe and enjoy your hiking and backpacking trips, whether you are brand new to outdoor recreation or have been hiking your whole life. With recurring workshops like Hiking 101, Backpacking 101, and Intro to Winter Hiking, you can get a broad overview of gear, safety, planning, and environmental considerations to have a successful hike. In-depth skills workshops dive deeper into long-distance backpacking expertise, like cooking and food prep, route planning, map + compass skills, and more.

Guided Hikes

GMC’s headquarters in Waterbury Center, VT, hosts a 0.7-mile “Short Trail” on our 53-acre property. Join us for weekly casual, drop-in, guided hikes on the Short Trail. A specialist from our Visitor Center will explain hiking basics, Long Trail information, and Green Mountain Club history to help introduce you to our work and orient your outdoor recreation in the state.

Community Engagement Events

GMC hosts speaker events throughout the year, including the annual winter speaker series focused on adventure and education. Hear from hikers, trailblazers, and subject matter experts on topics ranging from bats and beavers to trail construction techniques to record setting and barrier breaking.

Section-Led Outings

GMC’s volunteer sections (regional chapters) lead dozens of group hikes and other recreational outings each month. These are volunteer- run and organized and all operate a little differently. They are all open to the public, but group size is limited and group leaders may want to hear from you directly before attending an event. For now, volunteer-organized events are posted on this Google Calendar.

Volunteer Events

Sections organize group volunteer outings to conduct annual maintenance on their assigned adopted parcels of trail several times a year, concentrated in the spring and fall. These are open to the public and you are welcome to attend. Section leaders will provide tools and share basic trail maintenance skills training. If you are interested in further volunteer opportunities with the Green Mountain Club, explore those here.
