Elmore and Spruce Mtn. Fire Towers Closed

Hikers should be aware that the fire towers on Elmore Mountain (Elmore) and Spruce Mountain (Plainfield) are closed for repairs through the end of October. Trails and parking areas may be closed at the beginning and end of the construction period for helicopter operations.

Elmore Mountain Closures

  • September 29–October 1: The trailhead parking area will be closed. Campers may still access trails on Sept 29, but no vehicle parking will be available as materials are staged for helicopter transport.
  • September 30-October 1: The Fire Tower Trail, Ridgeline Trail, and Nature Trail will be closed for heli‑lift operations.
  • September 14–October 30: The Fire Tower will be closed until the project is complete. The Fire Tower Trail and Ridgeline Trail will remain open (except when material/equipment is being transported via helicopter), but the short spur to the tower will be closed. Updates to the closure period will be made as more detailed information is developed.

Spruce Mountain Closures

  • October 1: The trailhead parking area, Spruce Mountain Trail, and Darling Trail will be closed for use to allow for maximum public safety during the helicopter transport of materials and equipment needed for the project.
  • October 2–October 30: The Fire Tower will be closed until the project is completed. The public will still be able to access the vista at the top of Spruce Mountain (except when material/equipment is being transported via helicopter). Updates to the closure period will be made as more detailed information is developed.

These trails and towers are managed by the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation and are outside the Long Trail System. Learn more about the project here and explore nearby hikes using TrailFinder or GMC’s Find a Hike tool.
