Trail Maintenance Volunteers

Adopt a portion of trail or a shelter as an individual adopter, or join a volunteer section’s group work day (typically held in the spring and fall). Groups interested in volunteering on the Long Trail System can read more about Service Learning Opportunities. There are also occasional project-based volunteer needs; fill out a volunteer application or contact to learn more.

Help maintain trails and treadway on the Long Trail System. A complex network of individual and group volunteers ensure that every inch of the Long Trail sees some routine annual maintenance. This includes clearing drains, so that water can flow off the trail; removing blowdowns (fallen trees); and clipping back brush to maintain the trail corridor. You’ll work closely with GMC’s Volunteer Coordinator for training and ongoing guidance on how to handle trail issues.

Group Volunteering (Service Learning)

The Green Mountain Club Service Learning program works with businesses, summer camps, scout troops, college orientation programs, and many other organized groups to complete construction and maintenance projects on the Long Trail. Volunteering for the Green Mountain Club through a Group Service trip is a great way to give back to the Long Trail while also engaging the community of your office, scout troop, or school in a healthy, productive, and generous way.

We will work with you to identify trail projects that are a good fit for your group and that will accomplish mutual goals of improving the Long Trail while having fun in the woods. If you have a specific project you’d like to work on, please share and we’ll work together to plan and schedule.

Volunteering from Afar

Can’t make it to Vermont, but want to stay connected to your time on the Long Trail? Writers, artists, and photographers are invited to submit pitches or submissions for consideration for the Long Trail News or GMC blog. We also have occasional need for volunteers to serve on committees (that meet remotely) that help drive our work forward. Fill out an application or contact us today.
