Join the 1,000-strong Volunteer Corps Vermont-Wide
Volunteering on the trail or off of it is a great way to connect further with your love for Vermont’s mountains and trails and join a community of others who care fiercely about protecting and maintaining the Long Trail. You can volunteer to do trail work, educate fellow hikers, lead outings, and more. Learn more about the volunteer application process and how to get involved.
Submit Your Volunteer Application
Let us know your interest! Tell us a little about yourself and what sorts of volunteer opportunities you might be interested in. If you’re not sure yet, that’s okay too! We schedule a one-on-one conversation with all volunteer applicants.
Some volunteer roles have a specific application, listed below.

Talk to a GMC Volunteer Coordinator
GMC’s Lorne Currier oversees most volunteer onboarding, training, and project management. After receiving your application, Lorne will connect with you via email and schedule a time to discuss your interest. For certain volunteer roles, like corridor monitoring and trail stewards, another GMC staff member will be in touch.
Orientation and Training
Various volunteer trainings are required before hitting the trail, so that we can ensure quality and consistency across the trail system. For trail and shelter adopters, you will learn about common trail and hiker issues and the techniques we use to mitigate them. Information Volunteers will learn about area trails, hiking guidelines, and alpine plant identification and stewardship. Your participation in training is critical to ensure successful volunteer work.

Volunteer Reporting
Volunteers are the eyes and ears on the ground of the trail system. We rely on your thorough and timely reports to ensure we are aware of trail issues, and to track progress along the system. Volunteer hours are also required for many funding opportunities. Find your reporting form here.
