The Green Mountain Club is guided by our mission to make the Vermont mountains play a larger part in the life of the people by protecting and maintaining the Long Trail System and fostering, through education, the stewardship of Vermont’s hiking trails and mountains. To help us carry out this work, we have three strategic priorities: sustainable trail work, strategic land conservation and stewardship, and hiker education. 2023-2028 Strategic Plan
The current Strategic Plan, adopted in 2023, serves as a work plan for the organization. It aims to stabilize the gains we have made over the past five years while building on existing systems and operations needed to meet the organization’s longer-term goals. The five-year strategic plan is a living document that guides our work. While much of our mission is set and not bounded by time, our priorities and activities do change based on the changes we see around us.
Bylaws
GMC’s bylaws are the toolkit to our operations, and include guidance on volunteer leadership, dues, and governing structure. GMC undertook a comprehensive governance review process in 2025 and 2026, and proposed select changes to the bylaws that help reflect the club’s current standing and up-to-date non-profit best practices. The bylaw changes were approved at the June 2026 annual meeting. The current bylaws are posted here.
